RENSSELAER – Donald J. Casey, 91, of Albany, died peacefully July 14, 2025 at the Rosewood Rehabilitation and Nursing center.
An Albany native, Donald was the son of the late William and Katherine O’Brien Casey. He served honorably in the U.S. Army and later worked for many years at the New York State Office of General Services. The last surviving member of the Casey family, he was predeceased by his brothers William, Gerald, and Raymond Casey; and his sisters Mildred Casey, K. Regina Casey, and Joan K. Cappellano.
Affectionately known as “Uncle Don” to his 16 nieces and nephews, he was a beloved presence at family gatherings. Together with his sisters Mildred and Jean, he warmly welcomed extended family, including grand-nieces and nephews, and even great-grands, to their home each year for the cherished Casey Christmas brunch.
Donald spent most of his life in Albany’s Delaware and New Scotland Avenue neighborhoods before becoming a part of the St. Vincent’s Apartments senior community. In later years, he found companionship and joy living at The Eliot assisted living community in Troy. A man of gentle habits and a sweet tooth, favoring cookies and candy, he nonetheless kept a trim figure thanks to his commitment to walking nearly everywhere.
The family extends their sincere thanks to the staff at Rosewood Rehabilitation and Nursing center for the exceptional care, kindness, and compassion shown to Donald during his stay. Their attentiveness and support brought him—and those who loved him—comfort and peace in his final days.
Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Donald’s life at visitation at 10:00 AM and a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM on Wednesday July 23, 2025 at The Parish of Mater Christi, 40 Hopewell Street, Albany. He will then be interred with military honors at Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont, NY. Online condolences may be offered at: danielkeenanfuneralhome.com
