ALBANY- Joan Frances Grady Leonard passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025, at the age of 96, surrounded by her loving family. A lifelong resident of Albany, Joan was the daughter of Thomas J. Grady and Edith M. Picard Grady. She graduated from Vincentian Institute in 1947 and devoted much of her life to raising her family as a dedicated homemaker. After her children were grown, she enjoyed a fulfilling career with the New York State Department of Health until her retirement.
Joan was predeceased by her beloved husband, Francis T. Leonard, who passed away in 1989. She is survived by her four children: Francis T. Leonard of Temecula, CA; Annmarie Yellico (Martin) of Albany; Monica Ross of Albany; and John J. Leonard (Elaine) of Murrieta, CA. She also leaves behind several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews who cherished her dearly.
Joan found great joy in entertaining family and friends. A passionate foodie and self-taught chef, she loved experimenting with new recipes—always wearing one of her many aprons. A talented seamstress, she created prom gowns, holiday dresses, coats, and costumes for her children’s special occasions and school plays.
A woman of deep faith, Joan served as a Eucharistic Minister at both St. Peter’s Hospital and her parish, Mater Christi. Her Bible and rosary were never far from her side, symbols of the devotion that guided her life.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Joan at St. Francis of Assisi Church 391 Delaware Ave. Albany on Tuesday, November 11, 2025 at 10:30 am. Friends are invited and may offer their condolences prior to the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan’s memory may be made to The Community Hospice Foundation, 310 S. Manning Blvd., Albany, NY 12208. Online condolences may be offered at danielkeenanfuneralhome.com
