Joan F. McCormack

Aug 1, 1932 — Jun 26, 2026

Albany

The world has lost a bright light. Joan Florence McCormack, a truly devoted wife, mother, Grammy and Gaga, passed away peacefully at home on Friday June 26, 2026 at the age of 93.

Joan was born on August 1, 1932 to Rosario and Mildred (Suitto) Morreale in Albany, New York. She graduated as the Valedictorian from Cathedral High School and soon after met the love of her life, Thomas McCormack. They were married on August 27, 1955.

When Joan had her first child the following year, she dedicated all of her energy and love to being a full-time mom. A mother of four, she excelled at it, asking little for herself and focusing entirely on supporting her husband and children. She later brought that same devotion to being Grammy to her 13 grandchildren and Gaga to her 10 great grandchildren. Her smile would light up the room whenever she was with her family.

Joan returned to work when her children were older, working into her late seventies at Albany Medical Center. When her husband passed away suddenly in 1989, the strength and courage she showed throughout her life became a daily inspiration to her family and all who knew her. Joan was there for every family member event and milestone, always cheering loudly at oh so many graduations, sporting events and dance recitals.

She was an enthusiastic football fan of the New York Giants and Notre Dame, enjoyed reading voraciously (especially Mary Higgins Clark novels), time at the beach on family vacations and long walks with her husband. Her biggest passion outside of her family was her faith. She was a loyal parishioner of St Francis of Assisi (formerly St James) for sixty years and never let rain, snow or age keep her from attending Mass.

Joan is survived by her loving children, Thomas (Ellen) McCormack, Michael (Ona) McCormack, Jay (Regina) McCormack, Patricia (Greg) Mastrangelo and all of her cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Anna (the late John) Boyle and her brother Charles (Marjie) Morreale.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 34 years, Thomas McCormack, her parents Rosario and Mildred (Suitto) Morreale and her sister Louise (the late Charles) Saxe.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday, July 6th from 9am to 11am at the St Francis of Assisi Church, 391 Delaware Ave, Albany. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St Francis immediately following at 11am. She will then be interred at St Agnes Cemetery, Menands. Contributions in Joan’s memory may be made in lieu of flowers to the community hospice foundation at Givetocommunityhospice.org. Arrangements by Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, Albany.
