ALBANY- John M. O'Leary, 90, of Albany passed away unexpectedly at home on Tuesday April 7, 2026. He was a devoted husband to Pauline for 68 years, was a cherished father to Shawn (Christine) and Camille and a beloved grandfather to Erin ( Charles Hilsman) and Rebecca (Robert Whelan).
He is survived by a brother Andrew (Joellen) of Syracuse and is predeceased by his parents Owen and Christine as well as his siblings Elaine, Owen, Daphne, Eugene, Frankie and Maureen.
John and Pauline were married in 1958 at St. John's Church in Rensselaer. After serving in the US Army from October 1956 to September 1958, they settled in Albany.
John earned both a bachelors and masters in biology from the college of St. Rose and soon thereafter began his teaching career as a professor of Medical Laboratory Science at HVCC. He also practiced what he taught, as a medical laboratory technologist at St. Peter's Hospital, retiring after nearly 30 years.
John also served as a lector and usher at St. Francis of Assisi Church (formerly St. James Church) and was always willing to devote his time and energy to his family, friends and neighbors and will be sorely missed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday April 15, 2026 at 11 am in St. Francis of Assisi Church 391 Delaware Ave. Albany. Relatives and friends are invited and may also visit with John's family at the church on Wednesday from 9 am to 10:45 am prior to his Mass. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Rensselaer.
