NAPLES, FL- Bernard Kaplowitz, 79, of Delmar and Naples, Fl passed away Friday, May 20, 2016. He was born in Nyack, NY, son of Esther and Harry Kaplowitz. After serving as his high school class president for four years, he graduated in June, 1955. Mr. Kaplowitz attended the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1959. .He was a member of Sphinx Honorary Activity Society, President of Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity, and the Kite and Key Society. After graduating with a B.A. in Political Science in 1959, he attended Albany Law School, was class president his second and third years, and graduated in 1962.

Mr. Kaplowitz married Kathleen Laracy in 1960, together they had four children; Haley Jo Kaplowitz of Mission Viejo, CA, Mark David Kaplowitz of Camas, WA, Edric L. Kaplowitz of Albany and Jill C. Lyons of Franklin, MA. The family moved to Delmar in 1967. He practiced law in Albany County and as senior partner at DeAngelis, Kaplowitz, Rice and Murphy.

Mr. Kaplowitz was a GOP Committeeman for seven years, President of the Town of Bethlehem GOP Committee for 18 years, and a member of New York State Republican Committee for four years.

In Bethlehem, he was an attorney for the Board of Appeals from 1969-1974, served as prosecuting attorney for the Bethlehem Police Department, and served as Town Attorney from 1980 to 2002,From 1998 to 2002, he was counsel to Hudson River Black River Regulatory District. He served on the Albany Law School National Alumni Council, was a director of the Government Law Center at Albany Law School, and was a trustee of Albany from July 1, 2003 to 2006.

Mr. Kaplowitz was a member of Congregation Beth Emeth since 1968, and was a member of the Fort Orange Club and Normanside Country Club.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; his four children, six grandchildren; and his brother Murray Kaplowitz of Thiells, NY.

A Memorial service will be held Monday, June 6, 2016 at 12 noon in Temple Beth Emeth, 100 Academy Rd., Albany, NY 12208. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
