Kaufmann, Ruth L.

SLINGERLANDS- Ruth (Loewenstein) Kaufmann, 90, died Friday, March 06, 2015 at home with her daughter by her side. She had moved to the Beverwyck in 2013 to be close to her daughter and quickly made many friends there.

Born in Gottingen, Germany, Ruth and her parents fled Nazi Germany when she was 11 years old and settled in Flushing, NY. At age 16, she was introduced to a young German Immigrant Ulrich Kaufmann and told her mother that he was the man she was going to marry. After WWII, Ruth and Rick, a career Army Officer, were married and lived for a time in occupied Japan and Frankfurt, Germany. In 1960, they settled on Long Island where they raised their daughter Karen.

Ruth served for 20 years as Social Worker in the Nassau County BOCES school for developmentally disabled children .She was a role model for being an active and caring career woman at a time when most women did not work outside the home. She was known for taking special care with the less advantaged families that she worked with.

In those years, Ruth’s family enjoyed boating on Long Island Sound which she later said marked the happiest days of her life. In retirement, she and Rick were avid travelers, especially taking cruises throughout the world.

She was a talented seamstress and crafts person and enjoyed making her own clothes and home décor.

Ruth was predeceased by her beloved husband Ulrich “Rick” Kaufmann and her brother Alexander Loewenstein. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Kaufmann of Schodack and her cousin Gerald Rosenberg of Queens.

A Memorial service will be held at the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Albany, 405 Washington Ave. on Sunday, March 29, 2015 at 3:30 p.m.
