ALBANY- Reverend Cabell B. Marbury. Jr. 81 passed away unexpectedly on December 2, 2014.Born in Washington, DC he was the son of the late C. Bayne and Helen King Marbury. Father Marbury graduated with a BS in Biological Science from the University of Maryland. Father entered the Third Order Regular of St. Francis of Penance and graduated from St. Francis College in Loretto, PA with a MA in Scholastic Philosophy and Education. He did his diocesan theological formation at Theological College and Catholic University earning a MS in Sacred Theology. He later earned an MA in Guidance from Siena College.He also earned his Certification as a School Administrator from the College of Saint Rose.
Father was ordained to the priesthood for the Albany Diocese by Bishop Phillip Hannon in the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC on June 6, 1964.After his ordination, Father was assigned to Sacred Heart in Castleton and then Blessed Sacrament in Hague.In September of 1964 he was assigned as assistant pastor at St. Pius X in Loudonville and also as a teacher at Cardinal McCloskey Memorial High School in Albany.Fr. Marbury would spend the remainder of his more than 50 years of priesthood ministering at McCloskey, which later became Bishop Maginn High School.He served as theology teacher, band leader, guidance counselor, Director and Producer of the school plays and musicals, Director of Guidance, and Vice Principal.Upon his retirement in 2009, he remained at the school volunteering his time as Chaplain, and served on the School Board at Bishop Maginn.
In addition to his work in education, Father served in parishes throughout the diocese on weekends including St. Paul’s in Schenectady, St. Patrick’s in Cohoes,the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and St. James which later became St. Francis of Assisi on Delaware Avenue in Albany.
Father became a classical violinist as a very young man.His love of music and the arts continued throughout his life and was evidenced by his generosity and support for the McCloskey and Maginn drama and glee clubs, as well as the Metropolitan Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, and the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood, MA.He was instrumental in building a first class “production company “ at the high school and oversaw the stage crew, whose members became his second family.He taught them, officiated at their weddings, baptized their children and grandchildren, buried their loved ones, and acted as their mentor and spiritual advisor.
He leaves behind his “family” of children, William (Mary) Bowen, Richard (Penny Hill) Zazycki, and Robert (Cynthia) McLean.He is also survived by his “grandchildren”, Kathryn (Kent) Bowen Medhus, Andrew Bowen (Courtney Longton), Julie (Kyle) McLean Yanson, Keith McLean, and Godson, David McLean as well as 4 “great-grandchildren”.He leaves behind many cherished friends with whom he built a full life and shared of himself in the Albany diocese.Father Marbury is also survived by his lifelong friend and brother priest, the Rev. William E. Hartgen, Jr.,P. S.S. from Washington, DC.
Father Marbury was a member of the Metropolitan Club in Washington, DC, the Fort Orange Club in Albany, NY, and a social member of the Normanside Country Club in Delmar, NY.
Reception of the Body will take place on Monday, December 8th at 4PM at St. Francis of Assisi Church (Formerly St. James) 391 Delaware Ave in Albany; visitation until 8 pm. The funeral liturgy will be celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi on Delaware Ave in Albany at 11am on Tuesday, December 9th. The Most Reverend Edward B. Scharfenberger, D.D. will be the principal celebrant.Father Marbury will be entombed in St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands, NY. In lieu of flowers Father requested donations to Bishop Maginn High School. Please make checks payable to Bishop Maginn High School, 99 Slingerland St. Albany, NY 12202 and note in memory of Rev. C. B. Marbury on the check.
