MEMANDS-Sister Evelyn McCarte, D. C. died Saturday, March 5, 2016 at her St. Louise House residence in Menands. She was 80 years of age and 62 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.

Born in Melrose, Ma. On September 27, 1935, Sister Evelyn (baptized Evelyn) was one of four children born to Edward Eugene and Katherine Mary (Morissey) McCarte. Sister graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Melrose in 1953. She entered the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in December 1953. Sister Evelyn earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg, Md. In 1968 and her Master of Social Work Degree from Temple University in Philadelphia in 1972.

Following initial formation, Sister Evelyn served at Our Lady of Victory, Portsmouth, VA, (1955 to 1958); St. James, Johnson City, NY, (1958 to 1965); Seton High School, Baltimore, MD, (1965 to 1969); St. Joseph Hall, Philadelphia, (1969 to 1977; Sister also served as the Local Community Superior there, 1973 to 1977); St. Catherine Center, Albany, (1977 to 1979 and again August to November 1985); St. Anthony’s House, Bronx, NY, (1979 to 1980); DePaul Center, Vineland, NJ, (1980 to 1983); St. Vincent’s House, Albany, (1983 to August 1985); Sacred Heart, Cohoes, NY (1985 to 1993; while there, Sister also served as the Local Community Superior, 1985 to 1993; and as a Provincial Councillor for the former Northeast Province, 1987 to 1993); Sisters Hospital, Buffalo, NY, (1993 to 1996); Cathedral Syracuse, NY, (1996 to 2003; while there Sister also served as the Local Community Superior for four New York Daughters’ Communities from 1999 to 2002); Marguerite Naseau, Ogdensburg, NY, (2003 to 2011; where she served as Local Community Superior from 2003 to 2004); DePaul House in East Brunswick, NJ, (2011 to 2013); and St. Joseph’s, Holbrook, MA, (2014 to February 2016; Sister served as the Local Community Superior there from 2014 to February 2016).

Sister Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Betty. She is survived by her sisters, Kay and Margie; her Sisters in Community; and many friends.

A Wake Service for Sister Evelyn McCarte, D.C. will be held Monday, March 7, 2016, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Daughters of Charity DePaul House Chapel, Menands. A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Evelyn will be celebrated Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at DePaul House Chapel. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands.
