MENANDS, NY- Sister Ann Shea, DC a resident of St. Louise House in Albany, NY, died Monday, February 13, 2017 at Albany Medical Center Hospital. She was 86 years of age and 59 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. Born in Boston, MA, on July 12, 1930 Sister Ann was the second youngest of ten children born to Katherine McKenna and Cornelius Shea. Sister Ann joined the Community of Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in April 1957 in Emmitsburg, MD. Sister Ann graduated from St Gregory’s High School. She earned her Bachelor Degree in Education from Boston Teacher’s College and her Master in Social Work from Fordham University, NY.
Early in her ministry, Sister Ann taught in Canton, OH. Sister then served in Catholic Charities, New York City; as administrator of foster care in Buffalo, NY; in Catholic Charities in Brooklyn, NY; at a parish center in Vineland, NJ; as a social worker for Catholic Charities in Albany, NY; as Director of St John’s Parish Center, Utica, NY; as Director of Labouré Center in South Boston, MA; as Administrator of Nazareth Center Boston, MA; as Director of South Bronx and Harlem Catholic Charities; and as Parish Pastoral Associate in Randolph, MA. On January 31, 2002, Sr. Ann Shea was honored by St. John’s University as the recipient of the annual Caritas Medal given in recognition of her immediate and outstanding coordination of the massive relief effort by the Archdiocese of New York following the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center tragedy. On November 23, 2015 Sister joined the Ministry of Prayer at St Louise House and served there until the time of her death.
Sister Ann is survived by her brother, Father Bill Shea, many nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and her Sisters in Community. A Wake Service for Sister Ann Shea, D.C., will be held Friday, February 17, 2017 from 4 to 7 pm at the DePaul Provincial House Chapel 96 Menand Rd. Menands, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Ann Shea, D.C. will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017 at the DePaul Provincial House Chapel. Burial will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands, NY.
