ALBANY- Hazel (Phillips) Smith, 92, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 02, 2016 at her home.Born in Guilford, NY, she was daughter of Harold W. and Lilah (Cornell) Phillips.

She is survived by daughters, Nancy Newkirk (Donald) and Karen Smith (Guy Swenson); sons, Gary Smith, James C. “JC” Smith (Gail Pollard) and Robert Smith and a brother, Harvey Phillips of Sydney, NY. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Garfield Smith in 1993, as well as siblings, Olin Phillips, Esther P. Franklin, Algernon Phillips and Florence P. Benjamin.

Hazel believed in contributing to the community and was an active participant in several organizations where she often took a leadership role. Most recently these included the Albany Institute of History and Art, Albany Symphony Vanguard and the Ten Broeck Mansion, Albany County Historical Association. She held a great interest in the history of Albany and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Hazel was an avid quilter- always applying herself to new projects that would become gifts to family, friends or charitable organizations.

Hazel’s family would like to thank everyone at St. Peter’s Cancer Care Center for the kind attention and care paid during her illness.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, June 8, 2016 from 4 to 7 p.m. immediately followed by a memorial service in the Norman E. Dascher Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Ave., Albany.
