Smith, Joan M.

NEW SCOTLAND - Joan M. (Merkley) Smith, 71, died Sunday, August 25, 2013 at her residence. Born and educated in Albany she was the daughter of the late George and Grace (Little) Merkley and the step-daughter of the late Cornelius “John” Sullivan. Mrs. Smith worked as a crossing guard for the Albany School District while her children were young. She later retired from the former Albany Savings Bank where she worked in the mortgage department.

She is the wife of the late Joseph J. Smith; mother of Richard (Nancy), Erinn (Debbie) and Shawn (Meighan) Smith; grandmother of Alyssa, Hannah, Lacy and Chloe; sister of the late George Merkley and Richard Merkley. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday August 29, 2013 at 10:30 am in the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Ave., Albany. Relatives and friends are invited and may also call at the funeral home Wednesday August 28, 2013 from 4 to 7 p.m.
