GLENMONT- Earle B. Winchester, III. 66, died Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at home. Born in Albany he was the son of the late Earle B. Jr. and Mary (O’Brien) Winchester.He graduated from the former Vincentian Institute. Earle served in the US Air Force during Vietnam .He later worked for the NYS Legislative Bill Drafting. Earlewas a golf legend in the Capital District and beyond in a golf career bracketed by championships and fueled by a keen competitive spirit. In between leading the Vincentian High School Golf Team to three consecutive Diocesan League Championships as a young man and winning the NYS Golf Association Super Senior Championship in 2013, Earle competed at the highest levels of the regional amateur ranks as a life long member of Normanside Country Club. At NCC he served as Greens Committee Chairman for 13 years and won the Club Championship seven times and the Senior Club Championship four times. Earle was also a frequent competitor at numerous invitational tournaments where he was welcomed not only for his skill as a golfer but for his warm personality and easy-going demeanor. Whether in a hotly contested championship match or a casual round on Friday night before dinner, Earle was the consummate sportsman and a pleasure to be with on the golf course. Golfers of all skill levels felt comfortable with Earle and benefitted from his guidance and encouragement on the course. The sheer joy he felt on the golf course was often expressed through his signature giggle which will never be forgotten by the many friends made over a lifetime of enjoying golf.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Greenhalgh) Winchester; children William Sheridan Jr., Jeffrey Sheridan Sr. and Michael Sheridan; grandchildren Jeffrey Sheridan, Jr., Kyrstie, Shelby, Micayla, and William Sheridan, III. his sister Gail O’Shaughnessy; and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Earle’s life on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 from 1:00-4:00 pm in the Normanside Country Club, 150 Salisbury Rd., Delmar. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may send memorial contributions to American Cancer Society,1 Penny Ln, Latham, NY 12110 or to Community Hospice of Albany Co., 445 New Karner Rd., Albany, NY 12205.
